RNU6-598P is a processed pseudogene derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA gene, part of a large family of non-coding RNAs involved in pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes. While functional U6 snRNA is essential for spliceosomal activity, RNU6-598P does not encode an active RNA and is not transcribed for cellular function. Genomic analyses show numerous U6 pseudogenes in vertebrates, most of which are inactive. Recent studies indicate that some pseudogenes might influence gene regulation in cancer or other contexts, typically by acting as RNA decoys for miRNAs in a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network, but no such function has been attributed to RNU6-598P.
