Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 682, pseudogene (RNU6-682P) is a pseudogene related to the family of U6 small nuclear RNAs, which are essential components of the spliceosome complex responsible for removing introns from pre-mRNA transcripts in eukaryotic cells[3][1]. The functional U6 snRNA is highly conserved and critical for RNA splicing, but RNU6-682P is a genomic copy considered non-functional: it does not participate in spliceosome assembly, does not encode protein, and is not associated with known regulatory or disease mechanisms[5]. Pseudogenes such as RNU6-682P are common and arise from duplication or retrotransposition events; while some pseudogenes in other families can exert regulatory effects via mechanisms such as competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA)[2], there is no evidence of such function for RNU6-682P. There is nothing inherently incorrect or misleading about the gene symbol or name. However, it should not be confused with the active U6 small nuclear RNA genes, which play a direct role in splicing and may have indirect disease relevance when disrupted[1][3]. RNU6-682P is simply one of many genomic pseudogene loci in the U6 snRNA family, annotated by standardized gene nomenclature databases[4][5].
