U6 snRNA is a non-coding small nuclear RNA that plays a critical role as a component of the spliceosome, the complex responsible for removing introns from pre-messenger RNA during RNA splicing in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells[1]. However, as a pseudogene, RNU6-748P does not produce a functional RNA molecule and does not participate in biological processes like canonical U6 snRNA[5]. Pseudogenes like RNU6-748P often arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events, and they typically contain sequence similarities to their parent genes but lack the ability to encode functional products due to mutations or truncations—essentially acting as “genomic fossils” of formerly functional genes[5]. RNU6-748P is not known to have any direct roles in disease, is not a therapeutic target, biomarker, or safety concern, and there are no drugs that interact with it[2][5].
