Overview

RNU6-778P is a processed pseudogene derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA gene family. The parental gene, U6 snRNA, is highly conserved and plays a crucial role in the spliceosome complex for intron excision during mRNA maturation[1][3]. Pseudogenes such as RNU6-778P arise from gene duplication events or retrotransposition, resulting in duplicated genomic elements with mutations that prevent further functional expression[6]. Although most pseudogenes like RNU6-778P are nonfunctional and not transcribed, a minority can exert regulatory effects via RNA interference or as miRNA decoys—but no such function is documented for RNU6-778P[4][6]. This locus does not code for protein and is generally considered a “genomic relic” with no current use in drug discovery, biomarker development, or clinical diagnostics[5][6].\n\nKey notes:\n- Pseudogenes are not valid therapeutic targets, and the designation of RNU6-778P as a ‘target’ is inaccurate[5][6].\n- U6 snRNA itself, the parental molecule, is critical for spliceosome biology, but pseudogenes derived from it do not inherit any functional role[1][3][6].\n- No drugs, biomarkers, or safety issues are associated.\n- Occasional literature notes regulatory roles for some pseudogenes in disease, but this is rare and undocumented for RNU6-778P[4][6].
