Overview

RNU6-799P is a pseudogene copy of the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene. The original U6 snRNA is a critical component of the spliceosome, responsible for catalyzing the removal of introns from pre-mRNA during splicing in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells[3][1]. In contrast, U6 snRNA pseudogenes like RNU6-799P do not encode functional RNA or protein; they are formed via retrotransposition events, especially those mediated by LINE-1 (L1) retrotransposons, and serve as genomic relics of evolutionary past[4]. While most pseudogenes are not transcribed, or only sporadically so, some pseudogenes elsewhere in the genome have been found to give rise to regulatory RNAs such as siRNAs, but this role is not established for RNU6-799P specifically[6]. These pseudogenes have no established roles in disease, are not therapeutic targets, and do not interact with drugs[5]. Their primary significance is as markers of past genomic retrotransposition and genome dynamics[4].
