RNU6-861P (RNA, U6 small nuclear 861, pseudogene) is a human pseudogene, meaning it is a non-functional genomic locus derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene family[3]. The functional U6 snRNA is an essential, highly conserved non-coding RNA involved in the spliceosome complex, enabling pre-mRNA splicing in the cell nucleus—an essential step of eukaryotic gene expression[1][3]. Pseudogenes such as RNU6-861P, in contrast, typically arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and lack the regulatory elements or structural integrity to be transcribed as functional genes[2][3]. While some pseudogenes have been shown in rare cases to regulate gene expression via RNA mechanisms, there is no evidence that RNU6-861P is functional in this way[2]. Pseudogenes are not considered direct drug targets or physiological receptors, enzymes, or transporters.
