RNA, U6 small nuclear 88, pseudogene (RNU6-88P)

Target
RNU6-88P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Non-coding RNA (snRNA-derived), Other: Small nuclear RNA-derived pseudogene
01

Overview

RNU6-88P is a pseudogene copy of the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene, specifically the 88th variant identified in the human genome. U6 snRNA itself is a highly conserved, uridine-rich small noncoding RNA component of the spliceosome, a ribonucleoprotein complex essential for excising introns from pre-mRNA via nuclear splicing. However, RNU6-88P represents a non-functional, "dead" copy of this gene—meaning it does not produce active snRNA and is not involved in splicing or any catalytic role. Such pseudogenes are common in the genome due to gene duplication and retrotransposition events, acting as evolutionary relics without biological activity. While U6 snRNA is essential for cell viability and RNA processing, RNU6-88P lacks the critical promoter elements and/or intact coding sequence required for function. There is no evidence that this pseudogene contributes to disease, serves as a drug target, or acts as a biomarker in clinical practice.

Other names
RNU6-88PRNA, U6 small nuclear 88, pseudogene
02

Mechanism of action

None (no mechanisms of drug action are relevant for RNU6-88P)

03

Biological functions

Other (RNU6-88P has no known active biological function; it is considered non-functional as a pseudogene. The parental gene, U6 snRNA, is involved in RNA splicing, but this pseudogene does not perform that function.)
04

Disease associations

Other (No documented disease associations for RNU6-88P; pseudogenes are rarely direct disease drivers, though genomic pseudogene burden can be a topic in some genomics studies. No evidence of RNU6-88P involvement in cancer, inflammation, neurodegeneration, infection, etc.)
