Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Small nuclear RNA-derived pseudogene, Noncoding RNA pseudogene
01

Overview

RNU6-896P is a pseudogene member of the U6 small nuclear RNA gene family. Pseudogenes of U6 snRNA are produced through retrotransposition mechanisms, creating nonfunctional genomic copies of the original functional snRNA gene[2]. While canonical U6 snRNA is an essential RNA molecule that forms the core of the spliceosome and catalyzes pre-mRNA splicing, RNU6-896P itself is noncoding and does not participate in spliceosomal activity or cellular regulation[2][3][4]. The presence of such pseudogenes is common in vertebrate genomes and reflects evolutionary processes and the dynamics of retrotransposon-mediated gene duplication[2][3]. There is no evidence of RNU6-896P acting as a therapeutic target, nor any association with drugs or disease beyond its general role as a genomic marker of L1 retrotransposon activity[2][4].
