Overview

RNU6-897P is a processed *pseudogene* belonging to the family of U6 small nuclear RNAs. U6 snRNA is an essential component of the spliceosome—the enzyme complex that catalyzes pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes—but RNU6-897P itself is a noncoding RNA segment generated through retrotransposition and does not code for any functional RNA or protein. Pseudogenes like RNU6-897P are commonly found throughout the human genome as remnants of gene duplication, retrotransposition, or other genomic rearrangements. In the case of U6 snRNA pseudogenes, their presence can serve as a measure of retrotranspositional activity in the genome; however, these loci do not participate in biological pathways or cellular functions themselves[1][4][6][7]. Only the canonical U6 snRNA, not its pseudogenic variants, is incorporated into the spliceosome and is functionally active in mRNA intron removal[5][7]. RNU6-897P should not be confused with functional snRNAs or any therapeutic target. It is best classified as a noncoding RNA pseudogene and is not druggable, measurable as a biomarker, or clinically actionable. There is nothing to suggest it is misspelled, but its categorization as a drug target or receptor is incorrect[1][4][6].

Other names
RNU6-897PRNA, U6 small nuclear 897, pseudogene
02

Mechanism of action

None (no mechanism—does not encode any functional product or serve as a drug target).

03

Biological functions

None (Pseudogene; does not have a biological function as a mature RNA or protein)
04

Disease associations

None directly; pseudogenes of snRNAs are sometimes used as *markers for retrotransposition activity* but do not have a direct role in disease
