Overview

RNU6-940P is a processed pseudogene sequence derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA gene, part of the snRNA family involved in the spliceosomal excision of introns from pre-mRNA. While the parent U6 snRNA plays a vital role in RNA splicing, its pseudogenes, including RNU6-940P, are relics generated by retrotransposition events—primarily LINE-1 (L1) mediated reverse transcription—and have lost the ability to produce a functional RNA or participate in the spliceosome[4][5][1][3]. Human genomes harbor numerous U6 pseudogenes, likely reflecting historical retrotranspositional events rather than ongoing biological activity[4][5]. Some pseudogenes (not specifically RNU6-940P) can give rise to regulatory RNAs such as siRNAs, which may indirectly influence gene expression, but no evidence specifically implicates RNU6-940P in such a process[6].

Biological functions

No known direct biological function (does not encode protein or functional RNA)Possible minor regulatory roles through pseudogene RNA, e.g., production of siRNAs in some contexts (mainly shown in other pseudogene classes, not specifically RNU6-940P)

Disease associations

Other (No established role; pseudogenes are sometimes markers of retrotransposition or chromosomal rearrangements)
