Target
RNU6-950P
Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene, noncoding RNA)
01

Overview

RNU6-950P is a human pseudogene derived from the gene encoding U6 small nuclear RNA, a highly conserved and essential component of the spliceosome, the complex responsible for pre-mRNA intron removal in eukaryotic cells[3][1]. As a pseudogene, RNU6-950P does not produce functional U6 snRNA nor participate in the canonical splicing reaction, and its biological role—if any—remains uncharacterized. Pseudogenes may regulate their parental genes through competing for microRNAs or epigenetic mechanisms, but direct evidence for such activity by RNU6-950P is lacking[2]. There are many U6-related pseudogenes in vertebrate genomes resulting from the high copy number and evolutionary importance of U6 snRNA[3].

Biological functions

May act as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) or miRNA sponge (general property for pseudogenes, not specific to RNU6-950P)May occasionally be transcribed; function is noncanonical and not related to splicing

Disease associations

Other (while some pseudogenes are involved in cancer or other diseases, there is no direct evidence for RNU6-950P specifically)
