Overview

RNA, U7 small nuclear 123 pseudogene (RNU7-123P) is classified as a pseudogene related to the functional U7 small nuclear RNA (U7 snRNA). The canonical U7 snRNA is a component of the U7 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (U7 snRNP), which plays a critical role in the 3′ end processing of replication-dependent histone pre-mRNA in metazoan cells[1][3][5]. However, RNU7-123P itself is annotated as a pseudogene, meaning it is a non-functional genomic sequence similar to the functional RNU7 gene and is not believed to encode an active RNA product or participate in biological processes[2][4]. It shares homology with U7 snRNA but lacks recognized promoter elements or evidence of transcription or function[3][5]. Pseudogenes like RNU7-123P can arise from duplication or retrotransposition events of the functional gene and typically do not produce a product or have known physiological or pathological roles[3][5]. No evidence currently links RNU7-123P to therapeutic targeting, disease association, drug interactions, or biomarker status. The functional U7 snRNA (not the pseudogene) has been implicated as a tool in gene therapy research and is essential for normal histone gene expression, but these features do not apply to the pseudogene RNU7-123P[3][5].
