RNU7-156P is a pseudogene related to the U7 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) genes, located on human chromosome 5. U7 snRNA is part of the U7 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) complex, which in functional form is critical for the 3′ end processing of replication-dependent histone pre-mRNAs, a process essential for cell cycle progression. However, as a pseudogene, RNU7-156P lacks protein-coding potential and is thought to be a non-functional relic, with no current evidence for transcription into a functional RNA or any biological or disease relevance. Pseudogenes, such as RNU7-156P, often arise from the duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes. They typically contain sequence similarity to the parent gene but have lost the ability to make a functional product due to accumulated mutations, deletions, or truncations. While the RNU7-1 gene (functional U7 snRNA) is biologically relevant, regulating histone mRNA processing and implicated in rare genetic disorders, the RNU7-156P pseudogene is not implicated in any known function or disease and is not a therapeutic target.
