RNA, U7 small nuclear 167 pseudogene (RNU7-167P) is a human pseudogene located in the genome and is related in sequence to functionally active U7 small nuclear RNA genes, such as RNU7-1. Unlike functional genes, pseudogenes do not produce functional proteins or RNAs. U7 small nuclear RNA family members are involved in histone pre-mRNA processing, but pseudogenes such as RNU7-167P are generally transcriptionally inactive and do not serve cellular functions. The distinction between pseudogenes and their active counterparts is essential: functionally active U7 snRNA participates in mRNA maturation, especially for histone proteins, while pseudogenes are evolutionary remnants of their parent genes. There is no current evidence that RNU7-167P plays any role in health or disease, nor is it considered a therapeutic target.
