Overview

RNA, U7 small nuclear 23 pseudogene (RNU7-23P) is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it represents a genomic sequence similar to a functional gene but is widely considered non-functional due to mutations or lack of expression. RNU7-23P originates from the U7 small nuclear RNA gene family whose functional snRNA (U7) participates in histone pre-mRNA 3' end processing, a critical step for the synthesis and regulation of histone proteins during the cell cycle[1][3][5]. However, as a pseudogene, RNU7-23P is not known to produce active RNA or protein, nor is it implicated in disease, drug interactions, or considered a therapeutic target. Its designation is mainly as a non-coding genomic relic, distinct from functional members such as RNU7-1, which have established roles in RNA maturation and disease association[2][4][5]. The inclusion of "pseudogene" in the name indicates it is not a functional molecular target and should not be used in place of the functional U7 snRNA or the genuine U7 snRNP complex.
