Overview

RNA, U7 small nuclear 38 pseudogene (RNU7-38P) is classified as a pseudogene and does not encode a functional RNA or protein product. The canonical U7 small nuclear RNA (U7 snRNA) is an essential non-coding RNA required for 3' end processing of replication-dependent histone pre-mRNAs, acting as a key component of the U7 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particle (snRNP) involved in eukaryotic gene expression and histone mRNA maturation[3][4]. However, RNU7-38P is a processed pseudogene, which means it is a genomic copy resembling RNU7 snRNA but is believed to be nonfunctional. There is no current evidence that RNU7-38P functions as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or therapeutic target, nor is it involved in disease, drug interaction, or recognized as a biomarker[5]. RNU7-38P is a pseudogene—a nonfunctional copy—of the U7 small nuclear RNA gene. Pseudogenes, by definition, lack protein-coding potential and, with rare exceptions, are not direct drug targets, disease genes, or biomarkers. The functional, canonical gene in this family is RNU7-1 (RNA, U7 small nuclear 1), which is essential for proper histone pre-mRNA processing, but RNU7-38P itself is not functionally relevant in this context[1][4][5].
