Overview

The RNA, U7 small nuclear 60 pseudogene (RNU7-60P) is a non-coding RNA pseudogene found in the human genome, related in sequence to the U7 small nuclear RNA gene family. The canonical U7 snRNA is an essential component of the U7 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) complex, which plays a critical role in 3' end processing of histone pre-mRNAs[4][3]. In contrast, RNU7-60P lacks evidence of protein-coding potential or functional small nuclear RNA activity and is classified as a pseudogene—a genetic element that resembles a functional gene but is generally transcriptionally inactive and not known to contribute to cellular processes or disease pathogenesis[5]. Functional U7 snRNA is involved in histone mRNA maturation by binding to the histone downstream element (HDE) to facilitate cleavage and polyadenylation of pre-mRNA[4]. Mutations in functional U7 snRNA genes (e.g., RNU7-1), not pseudogenes like RNU7-60P, are associated with diseases such as Aicardi-Goutières syndrome[1][2]. RNU7-60P is annotated by multiple genomic resources as a pseudogene, not as a biologically active molecule[5].
