Overview

RNA, variant U1 small nuclear 19 (RNVU1-19), also referred to as vU1.19 and by several related names, is a member of the variant U1 small nuclear RNAs. U1 snRNA is a noncoding RNA essential for the function of the spliceosome, the molecular complex responsible for the removal of introns from pre-mRNAs. The U1 snRNA gene family includes numerous variant genes (vU1s) such as vU1.19, which are expressed at much lower levels than the canonical U1 snRNA. These variants are transcribed, capped, and incorporated into small nuclear ribonucleoprotein complexes (snRNPs), and vU1.19 can be found in spliceosomes. Unlike canonical U1, vU1.19 has not demonstrated the ability to support pre-mRNA splicing in reconstituted assays. vU1 family members may have cell type-specific expression patterns and have been implicated in stem cell biology and possible disease modulation through altered ratios with canonical U1 snRNA. However, there1 is currently no evidence that vU1.19 is a stand-alone therapeutic target, nor are there any known drugs or biomarkers specifically interacting with or detecting this variant[1][2].

Biological functions

Component of spliceosomeParticipates in pre-mRNA splicing (in vitro evidence for some vU1s; vU1.19 is processed and assembled into snRNPs and incorporated into spliceosomes, but has not shown ability to support pre-mRNA splicing on its own[1])Possible modulation of alternative splicing and cell fate decisions in certain contexts, such as pluripotent stem cells (based on vU1 family data[2])

Disease associations

Other (Altered vU1/U1 ratios may be implicated in stem cell biology and diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy or neurological disorders, but direct evidence for vU1.19's involvement is limited[2])
