Overview

RNA, variant U1 small nuclear 21 (RNVU1-21), also referred to as RNU1-122P, is a member of the variant U1 small nuclear RNA (vU1 snRNA) genes in humans[1][5]. Unlike protein-coding genes, these sequences produce small nuclear RNAs that are components of the U1 snRNP complex, which is essential for recognizing the 5'-splice site during pre-mRNA splicing. The vU1 snRNA genes, including RNVU1-21, were historically considered nonfunctional pseudogenes, but research shows many produce functional snRNAs and may regulate the processing of a subset of pre-mRNAs, especially by protecting pre-mRNA from premature cleavage and polyadenylation[1]. There is no evidence to suggest RNVU1-21 is a druggable therapeutic target, nor are there known drugs, biomarkers, or direct safety considerations associated with it. Its principal role appears to be regulatory in RNA processing rather than encoding any receptor, enzyme, or drug target; thus, it is not considered a canonical therapeutic target[5][1].
