RNA 2'-O-methyltransferase fibrillarin-like protein 1 (FBLL1) is a neuron-specific enzyme that belongs to the class of small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein (snoRNP) 2'-O-methyltransferases[1][2][4][7]. It catalyzes the transfer of methyl groups to the ribose 2'-hydroxyl position of RNA nucleotides, a modification implicated in mRNA stability and function. Unlike the canonical fibrillarin (FBL), FBLL1 has distinct substrate preferences and is predominantly expressed in brain and neuronal cells, where it is essential for 2'-O-methylation of GAP43 mRNA and thus, for neuronal differentiation. Knockdown of FBLL1 impairs RNA methylation and inhibits neuronal differentiation, suggesting a specialized role in neurodevelopment[1][2][4][7][8]. There is currently no reported evidence of drug interactions, biomarker utility, or specific safety concerns related to FBLL1.
