Overview

RNA binding motif protein, Y-linked, family 1 member F (RBMY1F) is a member of the RBMY gene family located in the AZFb region of the Y chromosome. It contains an N-terminal RNA-binding motif and several C-terminal SRGY (serine, arginine, glycine, tyrosine) boxes[4][5][3]. RBMY1F is primarily expressed in male germ cells, where it regulates alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs required for spermatogenesis. Deletions or microdeletions affecting the RBMY1 gene family, including RBMY1F, are strongly associated with various forms of male infertility, especially azoospermia and spermatogenic failure, as these proteins are fundamental for normal testis development and sperm maturation[2][3]. Although the precise role of RBMY1F's individual isoforms is still being elucidated, its presence marks functional germ cell development. Copy number variation of RBMY family genes is common in human populations, but no direct evidence links RBMY1F quantity with sperm motility or levels of reproductive hormones[2]. Some evidence also suggests that members of this family, including RBMY, may have an oncogenic role in certain cancers, such as hepatocellular carcinoma[3]. There are no known drugs or compounds that directly interact with RBMY1F, nor is it an established therapeutic target[2][3][4][5].
