Overview

RNA-directed DNA polymerase, commonly known as reverse transcriptase (RT), is a key enzyme encoded by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Its primary function is to catalyze the synthesis of complementary DNA (cDNA) from an RNA template, a process termed reverse transcription. This activity is essential for HIV replication and integration into the host genome. RT exhibits RNA-dependent DNA polymerase activity, DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activity, and Ribonuclease H activity. It is a major target for anti-HIV drug development.
