PDE6B is the beta subunit of the rod cGMP-specific 3',5'-cyclic phosphodiesterase enzyme complex. This protein is essential for normal visual signal transduction in rod photoreceptor cells. The PDE6 complex hydrolyzes cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), a key second messenger in phototransduction. Mutations in *PDE6B* are linked to inherited retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and congenital stationary night blindness.
