Overview

Dentin is a calcified, avascular tissue forming the bulk of the tooth structure beneath enamel and cementum. Composed primarily of hydroxyapatite mineral and type I collagen, dentin contains microscopic dentinal tubules housing odontoblast processes that transmit sensory signals and maintain tissue health. Gutta-percha is a naturally derived thermoplastic polymer obtained from Palaquium tree sap, most widely used as a core filling and sealing material in root canal therapy. Its main role is to prevent microbial reentry after the pulp cavity has been disinfected and shaped; it is biocompatible, radiopaque, and available in standardized cones but does not chemically bond to dentin, necessitating use in combination with sealers and proper technique.
