Target intelligence / Profile preview
Rotavirus G6P antigens are the primary surface proteins of specific Rotavirus A strains, specifically the VP7 (glycoprotein, G-type) and VP4 (protease-sensitive, P-type) proteins. These proteins form the outer capsid of the virus and are responsible for mediating viral attachment and entry into host enterocytes in the small intestine [Source: UniProt, P12473 (VP7), P12472 (VP4)]. The G6 serotype is frequently associated with bovine rotavirus strains, such as the WC3 strain, which serves as the genetic backbone for the pentavalent RotaTeq vaccine [Source: PubMed, PMID: 18467240]. In the context of vaccination, these antigens are used to induce a robust immune response, characterized by the production of neutralizing antibodies that block viral infection [Source: FDA, RotaTeq Package Insert]. Because rotavirus is a leading cause of severe dehydrating diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide, these antigens are critical targets for preventative medicine. Monitoring the prevalence of G6 and other serotypes is vital for assessing vaccine coverage and the potential for zoonotic transmission or reassortment.
