Rotavirus serotype antigens are viral surface proteins—primarily the glycoprotein VP7 (G antigen) and protease-sensitive protein VP4 (P antigen)—that define the serotype and strain diversity of rotavirus, a major cause of acute viral gastroenteritis in humans and animals. These antigens are responsible for eliciting neutralizing antibodies, serve as the basis for rotavirus classification, and are critical targets for vaccine-mediated immunity. Additionally, the variation and reassortment among these proteins drive the genetic and antigenic diversity of rotavirus strains worldwide.
