Rotavirus VP7 G4 glycoprotein is a 37-kDa calcium-dependent glycoprotein that forms the outer shell of the rotavirus virion (UniProt). It is a critical structural protein that determines the G-genotype of the virus and serves as a primary target for neutralizing antibodies (PubMed). The protein functions by mediating the late stages of viral entry, specifically the penetration of the host cell membrane and the subsequent uncoating of the viral particle (NCBI). In clinical medicine, the G4 genotype is recognized as one of the most prevalent strains causing severe diarrhea and gastroenteritis in infants worldwide (CDC). Consequently, VP7 G4 is a key antigenic component in multivalent vaccines such as RotaTeq, which are designed to provide broad protection against common rotavirus serotypes (FDA). Monitoring the structural integrity and genetic variation of VP7 is essential for the development of next-generation vaccines and monoclonal antibody therapies.
