The Rotavirus VP7 glycoprotein (G4 serotype) is a major structural component of the outer capsid of the rotavirus, which is the primary cause of severe gastroenteritis in children (CDC, 2023). This 37-kDa glycoprotein is essential for the late stages of viral entry and serves as a critical target for neutralizing antibodies (Greenberg & Estes, 2009). The G4 serotype is recognized as one of the most common human rotavirus strains circulating globally, necessitating its inclusion in preventative strategies (UniProt, 2024). In clinical practice, the G4 antigen is a key component of the pentavalent vaccine RotaTeq, which uses human-bovine reassortant strains to elicit a protective immune response (FDA, 2021). By inducing serotype-specific immunity, the G4 antigen helps prevent the severe dehydration and morbidity associated with rotavirus infection (WHO, 2021).
