Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis O-antigen is a complex polysaccharide component of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) located on the outer membrane of the bacterium. It is composed of repeating tetrasaccharide units consisting of rhamnose, mannose, and galactose, with a characteristic tyvelose side chain that defines the O9 serogroup (Liu et al., 2014). This surface structure plays a vital role in bacterial physiology by maintaining membrane integrity and acting as a protective shield against host defenses, such as the complement system and antimicrobial peptides (Murray et al., 2003). In clinical medicine, Salmonella Enteritidis is a major cause of foodborne illness and invasive salmonellosis, making its O-antigen a primary target for diagnostic assays and prophylactic interventions (NCBI, 2023). Current therapeutic development focuses on glycoconjugate vaccines that link the O-antigen to carrier proteins to elicit a robust T-cell dependent immune response (Micoli et al., 2018). Additionally, monoclonal antibodies targeting specific epitopes of the O-antigen are being investigated for their potential to provide passive immunity and enhance opsonophagocytosis (Simeon et al., 2020).
