Overview

The Vi antigen is a capsular polysaccharide expressed on the surface of *Salmonella enterica* serovar Typhi, the causative agent of typhoid fever. This capsule is a key virulence factor that distinguishes S. Typhi from most other Salmonella serovars. It inhibits phagocytosis and reduces immune recognition, contributing to the bacterium's ability to cause infection. The purified Vi capsular polysaccharide is used in typhoid vaccines to induce protective antibodies.
