It is a linear homopolymer composed of α-1,4-linked N-acetylgalactosaminuronic acid residues, variably O-acetylated at the C-3 position. The Vi antigen is a key virulence factor involved in immune evasion by inhibiting complement deposition and phagocytosis. It interacts with host receptors like DC-SIGN on macrophages, facilitating uptake and potentially promoting systemic infection.
