Satellite cells (muscle stem cells) are adult stem cells residing between the basal lamina and sarcolemma of skeletal muscle fibers. They play an essential role in muscle growth, repair, and regeneration by proliferating, differentiating, and fusing with damaged myofibers after injury or in degenerative diseases. Disorders such as muscular dystrophy and sarcopenia are associated with compromised satellite cell function. Much current research and therapy development is focused on enhancing the function, engraftment, and differentiation capacity of these cells, as well as optimizing supportive microenvironmental cues, immune modulation, and safe, effective delivery of stem and progenitor cells
