Overview

Scavenger receptor class B member 1 (SR-B1) is a multi-ligand membrane receptor that plays a pivotal role in the transport and metabolism of lipids and fat-soluble vitamins, including beta-carotene. It is the primary protein responsible for the intestinal uptake of dietary carotenoids and the selective uptake of cholesteryl esters from high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in the liver and steroidogenic tissues. Beyond its role in nutrient absorption and cholesterol homeostasis, SR-B1 serves as a critical co-receptor for the entry of the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) into hepatocytes. In the context of beta-carotene, SR-B1 facilitates the movement of this provitamin A precursor across cell membranes, making it essential for maintaining adequate vitamin A levels and supporting visual health. Therapeutic interest in SR-B1 includes the development of antagonists to block HCV infection and modulators to manage cardiovascular disease and certain cancers where the receptor is overexpressed.
