Huangqin is the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, a prominent medicinal herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) used for centuries to treat ailments such as respiratory infections, inflammation, and hypertension [1, 8]. Because of its multi-component and multi-target profile, it is classified as a medicinal agent or natural product source rather than a distinct biochemical target [1, 10].
Huangqin operates through a multi-target mechanism where its bioactive flavonoids, such as baicalin and baicalein, inhibit cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 12/15-lipoxygenase, suppress the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-6), and modulate the GABA-A receptor to exert neuroprotective and anxiolytic effects [1, 2, 4, 11].
