Overview

Sec31 homolog B (SEC31B) is a mammalian component of the COPII vesicle coat, homologous to yeast Sec31p and closely related to mammalian Sec31A. SEC31B is widely expressed in human tissues, especially enriched in cerebellum and testis, and is involved in mediating vesicular traffic from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus as part of the COPII complex. Alternative splicing gives rise to multiple isoforms: a full-length form (Sec31B-F) that functions in the formation and dynamics of COPII vesicle coats, and a truncated form (Sec31B-T) whose function is less well understood. The protein contains WD repeats and interacts with other COPII proteins such as Sec13 and Sec23/24, playing a role in the early secretory pathway. Currently, there is no evidence that SEC31B is a direct therapeutic target, is involved in specific diseases, or interacts with clinically used drugs.
