Overview

Sentan, cilia apical structure protein (SNTN), is a calcium-binding protein localized specifically at the distal tip of motile cilia in vertebrate epithelial tissues such as the respiratory tract and oviduct[1][2][3][5]. SNTN forms a critical bridging structure between the cell membrane and peripheral singlet microtubules, contributing to the specialized narrowed and stiff apical architecture required for effective airway clearance and ovum transport[1][2]. It binds phosphatidylserine and is thought to stabilize the distinct morphology of cilia with air-respiratory functions, and is conserved among tetrapods[2][4]. SNTN is not known as a therapeutic target or receptor, but is relevant in structural studies of cilia and some ciliopathies such as primary ciliary dyskinesia[3].
