Seoul orthohantavirus (SEOV) is a zoonotic, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Hantaviridae family (Wikipedia, 2024; PMC, 2024). It is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with the excreta of its natural reservoir, the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) (NIH, 2019; Wikipedia, 2024). In humans, SEOV infection typically manifests as hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), a condition characterized by fever, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury due to the virus's tropism for endothelial cells (PMC, 2024; MDPI, 2021). The viral genome consists of three segments (S, M, and L) encoding the nucleocapsid protein, surface glycoproteins (Gn and Gc), and the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, respectively (Internet in a Box, 2024; Wikipedia, 2024). While there are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or specific therapeutics for SEOV, the broad-spectrum antiviral ribavirin is frequently utilized to reduce mortality in severe HFRS cases (PMC, 2020; PMC, 2021). Experimental treatments such as favipiravir and entry inhibitors targeting the Gn/Gc glycoproteins are under investigation to improve clinical outcomes and address the challenges of vascular dysregulation associated with the infection (PMC, 2020; PMC, 2021).
