Serine beta-lactamase-like protein LACTB, mitochondrial

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine Protease
01

Overview

LACTB is a serine beta-lactamase-like protein localized in the mitochondrial intermembrane space. It regulates mitochondrial lipid metabolism and functions as a tumor suppressor. Overexpression is linked to obesity phenotypes, and it plays a role in cancer by modulating lipid metabolism, interacting with p53, and influencing responses to chemotherapy. It also contributes to mitochondrial organization through filament formation.

Other names
G24MRPL56lactamase beta[1]
02

Mechanism of action

Acts as an active-site serine protease regulating mitochondrial lipid metabolism; Directly binds to p53’s C-terminal region, preventing its degradation; Modulates responses to chemotherapeutic agents such as oxaliplatin by decreasing glucose uptake/ATP synthesis, inducing DNA damage, inhibiting autophagy, promoting apoptosis via caspase-independent pathways
