Overview

Plasmin is a serine protease enzyme primarily responsible for breaking down fibrin blood clots in a process known as fibrinolysis. It is generated from its inactive zymogen form, plasminogen, which circulates throughout the body and is activated by tissue-type or urokinase-type plasminogen activators. Beyond clot dissolution, plasmin can also degrade various extracellular matrix proteins and activate other proteins by limited proteolysis, playing roles in tissue remodeling and cell migration. Its activity is tightly regulated by inhibitors such as α2-antiplasmin. Dysregulation or excessive activity contributes to hemorrhagic conditions, chronic inflammation, and tissue damage.
