Serine protease 42, pseudogene (PRSS42P) encodes a member of a cluster of testis-specific serine proteases. The mouse ortholog is expressed during meiosis in pachytene spermatocytes and is important for germ cell survival. In humans, however, PRSS42P is designated as a pseudogene due to an early stop codon interrupting the trypsin domain, making it non-functional and not considered a classical therapeutic target. This locus is part of the serine protease family, which typically consists of enzymes that cleave peptide bonds utilizing a nucleophilic serine residue, but in humans PRSS42P is not enzymatically active. There is no known involvement in human disease, drug interactions, or biomarker utility, and it presents no notable therapeutic safety concerns.
