Overview

The serotonin (5-HT) 2 receptor family, including 5-HT2A, 5-HT2B and 5-HT2C subtypes, are G protein-coupled receptors that mediate the effects of serotonin in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Activation of these receptors primarily couples via Gq/11 proteins, leading to activation of phospholipase C (PLC) and subsequent increases in intracellular calcium and activation of protein kinase C. These receptors are widely distributed throughout the brain and are involved in a variety of physiological functions, including mood regulation, cognition, and sensory perception. They are also targets for numerous drugs, including antipsychotics, antidepressants, and hallucinogens. Receptor levels can be regulated by developmental stage or pharmacological intervention.
