Overview
The serotonin transporter (SERT), norepinephrine transporter (NET), and dopamine transporter (DAT) are three closely related proteins belonging to the solute carrier family 6 (SLC6) of Na^+/Cl^−^-dependent neuronal membrane transporters. They mediate the rapid reuptake of their respective monoamine neurotransmitters—serotonin (5-HT), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA)—from the synaptic cleft back into presynaptic neurons, thereby terminating neurotransmission and recycling neurotransmitter for vesicular storage or degradation. These transporters are expressed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems and play vital roles in mood regulation, cognitive function, and motor control. They are considered primary pharmacological targets for antidepressants, psychostimulants, and drugs of abuse, and their dysfunction is implicated in a range of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases.
