Other important allergens include Amb a 5, Amb a 6 (a non-specific lipid transfer protein), Amb a 8, Amb a 10, and Amb a 11—the latter being recently characterized as belonging to the cysteine protease family with potent pro-inflammatory activity due to its enzymatic function. These molecules are not classical receptors but act as exogenous antigens that bind directly to human IgE antibodies on mast cells and basophils, triggering degranulation and release of histamine and other mediators responsible for allergy symptoms. They play no physiological role in humans but are central targets for both diagnosis—via skin prick tests or serum specific-IgE assays—and treatment through desensitization protocols using standardized extracts.
