Sialic acid binding Ig-like lectin 22, pseudogene (SIGLEC22P) is a human pseudogene, meaning it is a non-functional segment of DNA that closely resembles the functional members of the sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin (SIGLEC) family but does not encode a functional protein. It is most closely related in sequence to CD33 (SIGLEC3) and resides about 13.5 kb away from CD33 on the genome. While it does not serve any physiological function as a protein, it can act as a template for gene conversion during DNA double-strand break repair, as documented during CRISPR-Cas9 mediated genome editing: portions of SIGLEC22P have been copied into CD33 in editable cell lines, resulting in chimeric protein sequence and loss of clinical antibody recognition. This property may present technical complications in gene-editing experiments but has no established physiological or therapeutic role.
