Receptor, Transporter, Porin (outer membrane protein)
01

Overview

The siderophore receptor and porin protein (SRP) of Salmonella enterica serotype Newport is an outer membrane protein complex consisting of a receptor for siderophores—small, high-affinity iron-chelating compounds secreted by bacteria during iron starvation—and an associated porin domain. SRPs facilitate the uptake of iron-siderophore complexes across the bacterial outer membrane, which is crucial for bacterial survival and pathogenicity within iron-limited host environments. SRPs are highly conserved among many Salmonella serotypes and are the antigenic target of SRP-based vaccines, which aim to limit bacterial infection by generating host antibodies that block iron acquisition. SRP-targeting vaccines are used in veterinary medicine to reduce the incidence and impact of Salmonella Newport infections, particularly in cattle, by inducing immunity that disrupts essential bacterial iron uptake. Vaccines against SRP may provide varying degrees of protection against different Salmonella serotypes, and no small-molecule drugs specifically target SRP.
