The skin barrier, primarily located in the stratum corneum, functions to protect underlying tissues from environmental insults and prevent water loss. Occlusive action refers to the formation of a physical barrier on the skin surface that reduces transepidermal water loss. Common occlusive agents include petrolatum, mineral oils, waxes, and silicones. While beneficial for maintaining hydration and protecting against irritants, overuse or improper use can lead to maceration or enhanced penetration of certain topical agents.
