Overview

Small nuclear ribonucleoprotein polypeptide A' (SNRPA1) is a critical protein subunit of the U2 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) complex, which is an essential component of the spliceosome machinery responsible for removing introns from precursor mRNA (pre-mRNA) in eukaryotic cells[1][2][4]. SNRPA1 enables RNA binding activity and is involved in spliceosome assembly and function, thereby playing a key role in pre-mRNA splicing[1]. It is evolutionarily conserved and essential for cooperative protein–protein and protein–RNA interactions that control splicing specificity[1]. SNRPA1 has been shown to be upregulated in the early stages of reprogramming to pluripotency, and its expression is dysregulated in a variety of cancers, where it may act as a biomarker for disease progression and prognosis[1]. In breast cancer, SNRPA1 acts as a splicing enhancer promoting the inclusion of exons that facilitate metastasis, while in liver and prostate cancer, its expression correlates with aggressive disease phenotypes[1][4]. Although SNRPA1 is not a conventional therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, there is growing interest in its potential as a diagnostic marker and as a candidate for targeted therapies due to its central role in splicing regulation in cancer[1][4].
