Overview

Small ruminant morbillivirus, commonly known as Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), is a highly contagious viral pathogen that causes a severe systemic disease in sheep and goats (Source: WOAH, 2024). As a member of the Paramyxoviridae family, its genome consists of a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA that encodes essential proteins for replication and host cell entry, including the fusion (F) and hemagglutinin (H) glycoproteins (Source: ICTV, 2023). The virus exhibits strong lymphotropism and epitheliotropism, leading to profound immunosuppression and characteristic clinical signs such as necrotizing stomatitis, enteritis, and bronchopneumonia (Source: PubMed, 2021, PMID: 34204445). While there are no widely approved small-molecule antivirals for clinical use in livestock, experimental studies have shown that nucleoside analogs like Ribavirin and Favipiravir can inhibit the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (Source: PubMed, 2019, PMID: 31145984). Control of the virus primarily relies on mass vaccination campaigns using live-attenuated strains, which are central to the global effort led by the WOAH and FAO to eradicate the disease by 2030 (Source: FAO, 2023).
