Overview

The cardiac sodium channel protein (NaV1.5), encoded by the SCN5A gene, is a voltage-gated transmembrane protein essential for the rapid upstroke of the cardiac action potential and fast impulse conduction through heart tissue. It initiates cellular depolarization, which triggers and propagates electrical signals necessary for coordinated heart contractions. Mutations or dysfunctions in SCN5A/NaV1.5 can cause various inherited arrhythmia syndromes.
