Target intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium-Hydrogen Exchanger 3 (NHE3), encoded by the SLC9A3 gene, is a membrane transporter protein that exchanges intracellular hydrogen ions (H⁺) for extracellular sodium ions (Na⁺) across the plasma membrane. It plays a crucial role in maintaining sodium balance, fluid absorption, intracellular pH regulation, and acid-base homeostasis, primarily in the kidney proximal tubule and intestinal epithelial cells. As such, NHE3 is a therapeutic target for diseases such as hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and gastrointestinal disorders.
